MAC Address Authentication

MAC address authentication allows you to log into your hotspot account quickly and automatically, without typing in your login name and password each time, or to login with devices that do not have a keyboard or web browser.

"MAC" does not refer to a Mac computer, instead it stands for Media Access Control. A "MAC address" is a unique identifier for an Ethernet or wireless port that is assigned by the manufacturer.

The first step in setting up MAC address authentication is to determine your device's MAC address.
  • If your device has a web browser, navigate to, then click the login link in the upper right hand corner. Your MAC address is shown on the login page below the password box and login button.
  • If your device does not have a web browser, look for a label somewhere on the device, typically on the bottom or back of the case. The device's MAC address may be printed there, and will consist of a sequence of 12 letters (A through F) and numbers.
  • Copy or write down your MAC address so you can re-enter it in the next step.
MAC Authentication
Use your MAC address to create a new account. MAC address authentication requires that you have a separate hotspot account for each computer or device that you use. If your device does not have a web browser, you can temporarily use a laptop or computer to complete this step.
IMPORTANT: This step MUST be completed at the hotspot in order to receive the correct account price.

MAC Login
NOTE: HotSpotPA hotspots cache MAC addresses. When a computer accesses the hotspot but is not granted access, the computer's MAC address may be cached in the hotspot for up to 30 minutes. If a MAC-authenticated customer is subsequently added using the MAC address of the computer that just attempted to connect, the customer will still be blocked while the MAC address is cached. This can happen when setting up a new MAC-authenticated customer after the new customer has already attempted to access the hotspot. This occurs even if the new customer did not complete the hotspot login screen, as the MAC-authentication process has already taken place. To allow the new customer to immediately log in, it is necessary to reboot the router in order to clear the MAC address cache.
Some HotSpotPA routers may have MAC Authentication disabled in order to improve performance for hotspots with high-latency Internet service.
